Ventilation: How Your Home Breathes

These days it might seem that staying home is the only way to avoid bringing illness back to your family. Maybe you just need to vent a little. And by that we mean ventilate your home.

Even outside of a pandemic, every home needs proper ventilation. The exchange of stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air not only makes us feel better right away, it also helps keep moisture, mold, and dangerously unhealthy particles from building up in the air.

But back to the subject of fresh air, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says bringing fresh, outdoor air into your home helps keep virus particles from accumulating inside. In other words, ventilate. Find a local Lennox® dealer and learn more.

However, since weather and the changing seasons discourage an open-windows policy (not to mention the pollen and other allergens that may come along with it), the CDC recommends you consider other ways to make your air safer and cleaner. Here are five things you can do now.

Add Active Ventilation

Consider adding an air ventilation system for the home. Healthy Climate® ventilators from Lennox are a better way to enjoy natural ventilation. Our Heat-Recovery Ventilator (HRV), designed for colder climates, transfers heat from inside your home to help warm the fresh air coming from outside, while the Energy-Recovery Ventilator (ERV), for homes in warmer climates, transfers moisture and heat from incoming fresh air to the outgoing airflow.

Filter Your Entire Home

When it comes to whole-home filters, the Lennox line of Healthy Climate® filters are without question the best available. They clean more aspects of your air consistently and effortlessly, allowing greater airflow than any other whole-home filtration solution, and promising cleaner, fresher air while reducing energy use***.

And if you're planning to open up your home to guests, that ventilation will be even more important. Before they arrive, set the fan to "on" instead of "auto" so it runs continuously. Then leave it on for an hour after your visitors leave to help remove virus particles that may linger in the air.

Looking to take filtration even further? You can enhance the efficiency of your fans and filters by using a portable, High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) cleaner.

Move the Air with Room Fans

The exhaust fans above your stovetop and in your bathroom may not only help move smelly air outdoors, they could also lower the amount of virus particules in the home. But fans of any kind—floor fans, table fans, ceiling fans—all improve air flow, and in doing so, assist the ventilation process. Just be sure to point fans away from people.

Perfect the Air with Purification

The Lennox PureAir S Air Purification System removes over 99% of the virus that causes COVID-19* from the air**, as well as even smaller viruses, bacteria, and fungal spores. And unlike other air purification products on the market, the PureAir S system doesn't produce ozone as a by-product and even works actively to reduce this known lung irritant. Pair it with innovative heating and cooling products from the Dave Lennox Signature® Collection and you'll enjoy the ultimate in indoor air quality and comfort.

* Removal efficiency based on third party testing results using MS-2 bacteriophage (ATCC 15597-B1). Bacteria representative of virus-sized particles like SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. November 2020.
** When used properly with other best practices recommended by CDC and others, filtration can be part of a plan to reduce the potential for airborne transmission of COVID-19 indoors.
*** Based on in-duct testing that shows Healthy Climate filters reduce air flow restriction. Greater restriction of air flow creates a greater load on a unit's fan motor, increasing energy consumption.
