LRP16HP Packaged Heat Pump
Great Beginning; Now Mixed Feelings
February 15, 2026When I purchased my latest house in 2009, the unit that was installed at the house was 7-8 years old. (Note: I live in N. Alabama where the humidity is extremely HIGH in the summers, and the winters are normally fairly decent; but we always have at least 2-3 "extreme" cold periods each winter where the windchill will be sub-zero to single digits for a couple of days (up to a week) at a time, and sometimes get ICE or Snow as well.) Fast Forward to 2023, I never had a single issue with the old unit at my residence; but I figured, that it was probably time to replace the unit with a more "Energy Efficient" one. After numerous HVAC vendor quotes on various units, I decided to go with the Lennox LRP16HP. The unit was installed in November 2023. In mid-January 2024, N. AL got hit with a nice ICE storm, followed by light snow. (ICE is different than snow - you can't drive on it). The storm basically caused people to stay at home for about a week due to the extreme cold weather and the roads not improving. My utility bill came, and I was pleasantly surprised. Others complained about their bills being so high. (Of course, I also know other factors such as home insulation, temp settings, air leakage/non-sealed doors & windows, etc.. play a big factor as well.) By the way, in case you are wondering; I have my thermostat programmed to auto. With my low temp for heat being 68, and the high temp for AC being 72. I leave it, and never adjust it. Following that storm, and through the next several seasons, the unit worked flawlessly. I changed filters on schedule; and had routine maintenance performed religiously. Fast Forward to January 2026, my area again had some extreme cold temps, and a light ice event. Again when the initial extreme temps and ice event occurred, my unit appeared to work with no issues. A couple of days later, while at work, I received a message from my thermostat that my Aux heat had been on for over 1.5 hours in the past 24 hours. I checked my history and it showed that my unit was in Stage 2 Heat, and had been for over 48 hours. When I got home that Tuesday, it was 63 degrees in the house. Air coming from the floor registers was cold, also, it was not the "High" Stage 2 air either. Typically when Stage 2 comes on (Heat or Cool), the air will move the puppy pads on the floor, and you can hear the difference. Instead, it was like standard stage 1 air- but no heat. I didn't call the HVAC company that evening; but the next day, when I got another message stating my AUX Heat had remained on - I again checked the thermostat app and saw my house was still at 63 degrees. It was in the mid-50's outside. I called my HVAC company and they couldn't get out until Friday. HVAC Company came out and after a couple of hours stated my Condenser Fan Motor wasn't running and that there was a Low Pressure Fault; stated they would get it ordered and come back out. Also since my fan wasn't running, I had to take my thermostat out of "Auto" and put in Aux Mode. That would be the only way to heat the house. Fast forward, to the next week, HVAC came out to install new Condenser Fan Motor and it still was not working; it kept going into a low pressure fault. After a couple of hours of the HVAC person being on the phone with LennoxTech Support, my HVAC guy stated that the fan requires 24 Volts to run and that the "Relay" block with all the wires, which rarely goes out - appears to be the culprit. Stated that on one side of the relay he gets a 24V reading, but there's only 12V reading on the other side. They would have to order it and come back. Overall, for 2 weeks, i had to rely on AUX heat only. The new "relay" has been installed; System had been placed in auto again. Hoping that this was just some "ODD" issue and nothing else will happen; but definitely glad I purchased the extended labor warranty.
