Very Disappointing Thermostat Design

The Lennox HVAC system itself appears to be working well so far. Heating/cooling performance has been fine, and I have no major complaints about the actual operation of the system. However, I am extremely disappointed with the thermostats that came with it. They feel less like fully functional control devices and more like limited “phone app accessories.” The physical thermostat only allows very basic functions such as on/off, heat/cool mode changes, and simple adjustments. Many of the features the thermostat supports cannot actually be managed directly from the wall unit. For example, creating or modifying schedules, managing more advanced settings, and even changing display options such as screen saver behavior, dimming, or turning off the thermostat screen all require the mobile app. That means the customer must have an Android or iOS device and an active Internet connection to access important thermostat functions. This is a major problem. If the Internet connection is down, or if a customer does not want to rely on a smartphone app, there is no practical way to fully configure or manage the system from the physical thermostat itself. In my opinion, a thermostat should be a complete, self-contained control device, not something that depends on the customer providing additional equipment and connectivity just to use normal features. To be clear, my complaint is not about the HVAC system’s heating or cooling performance. The system seems to work fine. My dissatisfaction is with the product design and the assumption that customers must use a phone app for essential functionality. For a major home comfort system, that feels like a serious step backward. Because of this, my overall satisfaction is very low. Lennox should give customers full control directly from the physical thermostat and treat the app as a convenience, not a requirement.
