How Lennox is Leading the Way in DOE's Commercial HVAC Technology Challenge
At Lennox Commercial, we've reached an exciting milestone: our cold climate heat pump rooftop unit (RTU) is the first in the 15–25 ton category to complete lab validation in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge.
This initiative calls on manufacturers to design innovative rooftop units that meet advanced technology specifications, helping organizations improve cost savings, energy efficiency and long-term reliability.
Why This Matters
Heating and cooling account for about 40% of commercial energy use in the U.S., so advancements in HVAC technology can make a big difference. Cold climates have always posed unique challenges for heat pumps—especially when it comes to defrost cycles.
By meeting and, in many cases, exceeding DOE's advanced performance requirements, we've built a solution that improves comfort, efficiency and reliability even in the harshest winter conditions.
How We Got Here
This achievement is the result of years of focused research and development at our Texas Product Development and Research laboratory. Our cold climate heat pump rooftop unit was tested and validated in an independent lab by both the DOE and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), confirming its breakthrough performance.
As our Chief Technology Officer, Prakash Bedapudi, put it best:
"We approach advanced technology development with the intent to deliver practical, real-world solutions, and the successful validation of our rooftop cold climate heat pump brings us another step closer. This unit reflects years of focused research and development to overcome cold-climate limitations, particularly around defrost, and deliver consistent comfort in the toughest conditions."
What's Next
Lennox is one of eight manufacturers participating in the challenge, and later this year, our prototype will be installed in a U.S. commercial building. This field validation will put our unit to the test in severe winter conditions and show how it delivers reliable comfort and efficiency in real-world applications.
Building Our Legacy
This accomplishment adds to Lennox's 130-year history of advancing energy-efficient solutions. It also builds on our success in the DOE's Residential HVAC Challenge, where we were the first to complete Phase 1 testing back in 2022.
The goal is clear: we don't just want to create technology that works in a lab—Lennox is committed to delivering practical, high-efficiency HVAC solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers across North America.
