How a Heat Pump Works

Efficient heating and cooling make Lennox® heat pumps the perfect choice.

Lennox® heat pumps provide an innovative and energy efficient way to keep your home comfortable all year long. During warm weather, a heat pump acts like an air conditioner, removing excess heat from your home and dissipating it into the outside air. During colder months, the process reverses. The heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and moves it inside, where it heats your home. In warmer climates that don’t require a lot of heat, the heat pump is paired with an air handler. The heat pump heats or cools the air, while the air handler circulates it through your home. In colder climates that require a lot of heat during the winter, the heat pump is paired with a gas furnace, creating what’s called a dual-fuel system. During cool weather, the heat pump does the heating, using the furnace as a blower to circulate the warmed air. When it gets very cold, the heat pump shuts off and the furnace takes over, doing all the heating and air movement. A dual-fuel system can warm your home with either gas or electricity, so you stay comfortable and energy efficient, no matter how cold it gets.
