AUSTIN-AREA RESIDENT WINS NATIONAL LENNOX ‘ENERGY SAVINGS SUPERSTAR’ CONTEST

DALLAS – Sept. 24, 2013 – Solar ovens are relatively inexpensive to purchase – some as low as 50 dollars online – but as Susan Williams of Georgetown, Texas found out, sometimes, they can be worth a lot more.

Williams shared her family’s solar cooking tip as a home energy-saving idea by entering the national “Energy Savings Superstar” contest sponsored by Lennox Industries, a leading manufacturer of residential cooling, heating and indoor air quality products.

Lennox today announced that Williams is the grand prize winner of the online promotion. As part of her prize package, designed to help the family beat the heat now and in the future, Williams will receive:

  • $10,000 in Lennox cooling, heating and indoor air quality equipment
  • A one-year supply of ice cream
  • Four tickets to a nearby water park

As part of her entry into the Lennox “Energy Savings Superstar” sweepstakes, Susan Williams of Georgetown, Texas, submitted the following energy-savings tip:

“One of our favorite energy-saving tricks is to cook meals using a solar oven, which uses free, clean solar power. They are available for purchase, but you can also build your own out of recycled materials. Also, solar ovens are so safe and user-friendly that young children can help with assembly and even cooking!”

Mrs. Williams also submitted the following photo of her family using Zen to beat the summer heat:

The contest challenged entrants to submit unique tips for saving energy at home, as well as a photo depicting how their family beats the summer heat.

For the winning submission, Williams turned to her solar oven, which she uses to spend time with her family, while keeping the house cool.

“Cooking with a solar oven helps keep our utility bill low by not needing to turn down the air conditioner to combat the added heat from a traditional oven,” said Williams. “Also, because the solar oven is so easy to assemble and use, the children enjoy helping and we have an opportunity for quality family time instead of them retreating to their rooms for video games.”

With the goal of helping Williams further lower her utility bills and improve the overall comfort of her home, the $10,000 prize will go toward the purchase of high-efficiency Lennox heating, cooling and indoor air quality products.

“We received hundreds of innovative energy-saving tips as part of the Lennox Energy Savings Superstar Contest, but with her simple yet creative idea, Susan Williams shows how even small changes can make an impact on the energy efficiency of a home, and we’re excited for her and her family,” said Bobby DiFulgentiz, energy efficiency expert at Lennox Industries. “Since Lennox is a recognized leader in energy-efficient heating, cooling and indoor air quality products, the Williams family can be confident they’re receiving products that will maximize energy savings while also keeping them cool during the long Texas summers for many years to come.”

The Lennox “Energy Savings Superstar” contest entry period was open from July 1 through Aug. 31, 2013, enabling consumers from around the country to submit their energy-saving idea and a photo beating the summer heat. Lennox selected two finalists to compete in a head-to-head vote on the company’s Facebook page from Sept. 15-21.

The other finalist, Lara Bush-Pensy from Janesville, Wisc. submitted the following energy-saving idea:
“Beyond installing water-saving toilets and collecting rain water for indoor plants, we have a raw meal challenge that is fun and saves energy! We compete to come up with ideas to create dinners that don’t require using any electrical appliances, and we eat by gathering totally in the dark – no electricity, only candles.”

Williams garnered the most votes on Facebook, topping Bush-Pensy, to become the official Lennox “Energy Savings Superstar.”
